Tourist information

If you intend on visiting the oldest, most historic and architecturally magnificent city in the United Kingdom, you must be interested in Oxford tourist information. There's not much here that won't take your breath away! The first thing you will want to do upon arrival is go to a foreign currency exchange so you can get some pound sterling or use an ATM machine. You will find that some smaller shops and restaurants do not take credit cards and many that do will request a PIN.

Getting around Oxford is tourist information every visitor is interested in. This city is designed for the pedestrian and you really can walk nearly everywhere. This city's centre offers sidewalks everywhere to all the tourist attractions but be on the lookout for cyclists looking to take a short cut. If you are walking down narrow streets, you may be forced to share the bike lane; please stay to one side and don't make sudden changes in direction without looking behind you.

Stagecoach and the Oxford Bus Company both offer urban buses. You will find that fees can be surprisingly expensive. If you intend on making more than two trips, buy an all-day pass; it will end up costing you less.

There are also mini cabs and metered taxis here which you can flag down or order on the phone. Meter taxis can be expensive but are practical for shorter trips. Mini cabs are much less costly but negotiate your price first!

Oxford travel information

Although it's hard to imagine such an elegant city having any crime, caution should be exercised like in any other tourist area. There is a lot of poverty in Oxford and the city sees as much theft, violence and drug concerns as larger cities in the UK. Stay out of dark alleys at night, avoid Blackbird Leys area and don't get mixed up in any bar fights and you should be fine. It's rare that any tourists report problems while sightseeing during the day. If you do need the police or an ambulance, dial 999 from any phone. This is an English speaking city so language barriers won't be a concern.

Climate is another thing you are probably interested in regarding tourist information for Oxford. The city enjoys a maritime temperate climate which means summers are warm and winters are cool and quite comfortable. July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 21.7°C but temperatures have been reported as hot as 35.6°C. Winters average temperatures of 7.4°C but record lows of -16.2°C have occurred. Precipitation is well spread out through the year; it's not extreme but it is consistent.
