Oxford shopping

Lots of good shops and many independent ones make for some varied shopping. Books feature strongly with Blackwell's Bookshop one of the best stocked bookshops in the world with a huge basement that provides miles of shelving.

The Covered Market
The Covered Market is a historic market which has permanent stalls and shops inside a large roofed structure in central Oxford, north of the High Street biased towards the junction between Cornmarket and Turl Streets. Market Street is to its north. Most of the entrances are from the High Street and Market Street (four from each street). Today the prosperous Market is still home to numerous traders, mainly food retailers selling fresh food such as greengrocers and butchers (including some who produce the distinctive, local Oxford sausage). There are also newer gift shops, bakeries, cheese and sandwich shops. Most shops now are larger than the original stall sizes, and so the number of businesses in the covered market is less than in the past, but the scope of trading has enlarged.

Commercial areas in the city centre include Broad Street; Clarendon Shopping Centre; Cornmarket Street; George Street; Golden Cross; The High Street; Little Clarendon Street; Queen Street, Oxford; The Covered Market; Turl Street; Westgate Shopping Centre; Oxford Castle and Gloucester Green.

The ubiquitous Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s supermarkets are, as always, strategically distributed throughout the township. Both have UK standard working hours, 0800-2000 hrs
